The seven-time overall champion Marcel Hirscher won the Saalbach World Cup Slalom in his native province of Salzburg on Thursday for his 63rd career victory, overtaking Annemarie Moser-Proell, who had 62 wins when she retired in 1980. Defying difficult course conditions, Hirscher held on to a big first-run lead to finish 0.38 seconds ahead of Loic Meillard of Switzerland, who was only 12th after the opening run and claimed his second podium in two days. Henrik Kristoffersen of Norway was 0.47 seconds behind in third.

Just one day after a rare reverse Marcel Hirscher fought his way back to the place he belongs to. His sovereign first run let him start the second one with a lead of 0.52 seconds. He defended his advance on the difficult „Schneekristall“ course and won the race with a stunning total time of 1:54.98. The local Manuel Feller had a good race too; he managed to bring down a total of 1:55:64 and finished on the fourth place. Michael Matt was second in run one and finished fifth, despite his back pain. Germanys Felix Neureuther made another remarkable run. After his torn ACL, a broken thumb an a concussion he had a nearly perfect comeback, rank four after the first round and finishing on place 27 after a major mistake in round two.

Marcel Hirscher (Winner/AUT): „That was one of the most difficult slaloms I've ever taken part in, on the steep part, you just have to make sure that you come down. It was hardly skiable. All in all it was a good and solid performance.“

Loic Meillard (2./SUI): „“I would have been happy with a top-10 result and I can’t believe I am on the podium for two days in a row and to be on a podium with Marcel and Henrik is truly something special.”

Henrik Kristoffersen (3./NOR): „It was really on the limit. It was tough, incredible. The last part was really dangerous, the conditions changed between icy and soft. The third place is nice but not great. I’m happy for Loic, he is a good friend!“

Manuel Feller (4./AUT): „The second run was more than OK. I changed my skis and boots and really liked my setup. The conditions in the second run were more forgiving than earlier that competition day. Thanks a lot to my fans from my hometown Fieberbrunn, a lot of them where here to cheer for me!“
