Copenhill: Waste Incineration Plant as a Ski Slope

Saalbach and Copenhill create synergies

Last weekend from the 4th to 6th October, after a lengthy wait, Copenhill was opened. The waste incineration plant in Copenhagen is not only the provider of 30,000 households with clean energy but also provides Danish winter sports enthusiasts with a ski slope. The Danish guests spend around 1.5 million overnight stays in Austria every year, with almost half of it choosing Salzburger Land* for their stay. The Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn and Copenhill use this affinity to combine their resources in acquiring guests.

A unique type of project was revealed in Copenhagen last weekend. The “Amager Ressource Center” waste incineration plant provides electricity for 30,000 households and heating for 72,000, but that is not all: from the roof right down the ground floor, the building is surrounded by a 450-metre-long ski slope along with four lifts. Between the top and bottom, the slope becomes flatter, enabling the young generation to get to grips with the sport at the foot of the building. On the “Copenhill”, the hazards are not on snow, but on green matting.

“Urban Mountain“
It is not only skiing that is possible on the “urban mountain“. Directly next to the slope there is a 490- metre long hiking and running trail offering panoramic views over Copenhagen. The largest climbing wall in northern Europe, with a height of 85 metres is to be built on the facade. The associated infrastructure including a sports shop, ski school, ski rental, après ski bar, restaurant and café round off the offer and render the newly built leisure facility as an attraction for all outdoor sports enthusiasts.

Utilising synergies
With nearly 80,000 overnight stays during the winter of 2018/2019, Denmark is one of the most important markets for Saalbach Hinterglemm. “We are really enthusiastic about the Copenhill project. It is here that the Danes can make their first turns or brush up on their skills before they visit us in the Skicircus”, says Isabella Dschulnigg-Geissler, Managing Director of the Saalbach Lift Company during a tour of Copenhill.

“Naturally, we will take the opportunity to reach out to our Danish guests via this facility,” says Wolfgang Quas, Marketing Manager of the Saalbach Hinterglemm Tourist Office. “We begin with a cooperation from which both sides will profit enormously, without a considerable monetary investment, by utilising each other’s contact points with the guests”.

Heinz Fuchs, Chairman of the Saalbach Hinterglemm Tourist Office, comments: “Our branded gondolas and chairlifts are a perfect spot for Copenhill guests to take a quick rest and take some photos. A Race-To-Saalbach should also draw the guests’ attention to us. In Saalbach, there will be a Race-To-Copenhill as an equivalent. We are eager to see how our cooperation will develop further.”

300,000 guests are expected to visit Copenhill every year. “We wish to offer visitors the full programme of a holiday in the Alps. Skiing, après ski and everything that goes with it, all packed into a three to four-hour stay”, says Christian Ingels (CEO from Copenhill) in an interview with the Guardian newspaper.
