It was a stakeholder meeting with an Alpine twist – this time in hiking boots rather than on skis. During the summer inspection on 16 September 2026, representatives of the FIS, the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV), Austrian broadcaster ORF, Schiclub Saalbach Hinterglemm, Hinterglemmer Bergbahnen and the Saalbach Hinterglemm Tourist Board inspected the race courses on the Zwölferkogel together and coordinated requirements for the upcoming competitions. Their shared goal: to build on the success of the 2025 Alpine World Ski Championships and prepare the men’s downhill and super-G courses to the highest standard for the athletes, while showcasing the racing for spectators on the Zwölferkogel and viewers watching at home.

Drawing on Experience from the 2025 World Ski Championships

The international ski federation FIS and the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV) coordinated the start and reserve start locations, course layouts, potential key sections and supply points for volunteers in close consultation with Schiclub Saalbach Hinterglemm and Hinterglemmer Bergbahnen. Everyone involved benefits from the extensive experience gained during the Audi FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2025.

“Two years after an outstanding World Ski Championships, the world’s best downhill racers will return to the legendary Zwölferkogel. This is a tremendous addition to the entire men’s World Cup tour. Thanks to the major investments in state-of-the-art snowmaking systems made for the World Championships, we can once again expect excellent slope conditions, setting the stage for an exciting spectacle of ski racing. The dynamic organising committee can draw on all the valuable experience gained at the World Championships and is ready for this new challenge with confidence and full motivation,” says Markus Waldner, FIS Chief Race Director Alpine Men.

ORF’s television production will be led by ORF Sport’s chief director, Michael Kögler. Technical details of the broadcast were also a key part of the summer inspection. Alongside his team, Kögler reviewed the planned camera positions along the courses to capture the full dynamics of the racing for television viewers and bring Saalbach’s distinctive atmosphere into their homes.

Strong Attendance Reflects Close Cooperation

A total of 35 representatives from the various organisations took part in the FIS summer inspection on the Zwölferkogel.

“The pleasant early autumn weather certainly helped put everyone in good spirits. From my perspective, none of the requests from the FIS, ÖSV or ORF are beyond our capabilities. Together with Schiclub Saalbach Hinterglemm, our tourist board and the municipality, we at Hinterglemmer Bergbahnen can prepare and stage the World Cup races successfully, taking care of snowmaking and course preparation. We are looking forward to working together,” says Peter Mitterer, Managing Director of Hinterglemmer Bergbahnen.

“Yesterday’s course inspection went very well. Preparations by Schiclub Saalbach Hinterglemm are progressing well. Our experienced organising committee and the club’s many young members are eagerly looking forward to the 2027 World Cup races and are committed to creating perfect course conditions for the athletes,” adds Fritz Steger, Chairman of Schiclub Saalbach Hinterglemm, highlighting the close cooperation between the organising partners.

The race programme for the Audi FIS Ski World Cup Saalbach 2027 has already been confirmed: the men’s downhill will take place on 27 February, followed by the men’s super-G on 28 February. Tickets are now available with an early bird offer.
