What was thought impossible after Storm Sabine, became reality today in today’s downhill race. Sunshine and ideal conditions for the athletes competing in the downhill. The immense effort of the organisers along with help from numerous volunteers and the German Army was justified. The 55 athletes showed their appreciation to the organisers with great sporting achievements, with 30 racers completing the course within 1.95 seconds. The only glitch today was the start of the downhill being set below the Hahnleitn, which shortened the downhill by around 20 seconds. Even Storm Sabine showed sympathy toward the fastest Alpine discipline and winds subsided for the duration of the race. Surprisingly, Thomas Dressen (GER) took the victory in 1:32.96 minutes, ahead of two Swiss racers Beat Feuz (0.07 sec behind) and Mauro Caviezel (0.09 sec).

The evening before the downhill race, the upper part of the racecourse was ripped open from the Super-G start upwards. Softer snow was treated with water so that the race course was in pristine condition today. Beat Feuz put it in a nutshell: “The race today was 180 per cent different from the training the day before. Congratulations to the organisers. The race was decided in the last third of the course, from the Xandl curve to the start of the “Zielsprung”. The fastest racer on the upper part of course was Mauro Caviezel. He gave away his victory in the Karussell. The race winner, Dressen did the opposite. He had difficulties right after the start and was wide of the ideal racing line and was happy that after a “deep snowplough” he managed to keep his skis on. He continued in a relaxed style and went onto take victory in the technical passages. The downhill was dominated by the Swiss today, who took second to fifth place behind the German. The ÖSV racers came in sixth (Kriechmayr) and eleventh (Mayer) place.
